The people who used to work in the salt fields and had to watch helplessly as the skin peeled off their hands were happy to get the chance to pray for comfort. To this end, Carlos III built this church in the 18th century right on the edge of the salt flats – not as a fortified church, but as a chapel of appreciation for the salt workers. A magnificent golden altar dominates the interior; otherwise, the architecture is very clear and simple for a Catholic church.
