VILLA D'ESTE

Every hotel has its own amusing anecdotes. But few can compare to those of the stories in the palace of the Renaissance-cardinal Gallio. The infamous murder in 1948 leads the way: Countess Pia Bellentani shot her lover out of jealousy during a ball in the evening. The location on the shores of Lake Como has also gained it fame in the world of international hospitality, as it is often counted amongst the best hotels in the world. Once a convent, then the home of counts, a princess, and a ballerina—from 1873 a luxury hotel, a meeting place for European nobility, the rich and famous. The 152 elegant rooms and the spa, the piano bar, salon, and restaurant are divided between two buildings, one from the 16th and the other from the 19th century. The expansive gardens, with a nymphaeum and fountains, are located right on the banks of the lake.
