Everything is extravagant at this hideaway in the vineyards above the Douro Valley, whose steep slopes are home to the grapes that mature to make the world-famous Port wine. The restored cottages are treated with an eclectic decor and bold colors. The interiors of the 19 rooms are pure elegance. Handcrafted items from Papua New Guinea and India provide idiosyncratic accents. There is no restaurant as such. Each meal is served with a view to culinary staging and in a different location: on a shaded terrace under lemon trees or in the library before the glimmering fireplace.
