57 palms line the driveway of the Mount Nelson Hotel, located in a ten-acre park in the heart of Cape Town. In spite of thorough facelifts which brought the grande dame of South African hotels up-to-date for the 21st century, the “Pink Lady” hasn’t lost any of its colonial charm. In the 201 rooms and suites, pieces of furniture originally used on ships remind guests of the property’s origins as the official hotel of the Union-Castle Line whose wealthy cruise passengers would stay there during stopovers.
