JOY’S CAMP
PHOTOS MAPS

One of the world’s first environmental activists, Joy Adamson (1910–1980) loved Kenya and lions. Opened in 2006, the camp named after the Austrian naturalist is in the same location in Shaba National Reserve where she had her research tent. The ten tents allow guests to experience the spectacular scenery in a great deal more luxury than existed in Joy’s time. The camp’s construction is an exciting amalgamation of African and Arab influences—a reminder of the caravans from the Orient that once set out from the coast to penetrate the country’s interior.
