DUNTON HOT SPRINGS
PHOTOS MAPS

A place of dreams, Dunton began as a small mining camp, founded during the 1880s. Here, the residents built their cabins and dug ore from the mines until the rush was over in a few decades, leaving it behind as a ghost town. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the current owner, Christoph Henkel, fell in love with the town and transformed it into a whimsical wilderness resort. The twelve cabins have been converted into cozy abodes for up to 44 guests, each with gas stoves, furs, Navajo-style blankets, artifacts, and artwork from around the world. The winter season is especially enchanting, when a blanket of snow covers the landscapes. The saloon serves as the dining room, and it’s no coincidence that the trout was freshly caught in the neighboring Dolores River: The menu consists primarily of local ingredients. Just outside of the city, eight luxury tents make up the new Cresto Ranch, a part of the resort.
