Set in the rocky desert landscape at the foot of the Atlas range, the imposing reddish-brown kasbah dominates its surroundings, once a refuge for villagers fleeing marauding Berber tribes. As soon as the heavy wooden door closes, the inhospitable desert world is locked outside. Flowers bloom everywhere, palm trees give shade, fountains splash reassuringly. In the interior, the “House of Dreams”—which is what Dar Ahlam means—is entirely without Oriental pomp. The owner, an event manager from Paris, has designed nine suites and three villas with elegant simplicity. Individual pieces such as a ceramic vase perfectly positioned in a niche or an antique wooden chest draw the focus.
