Carton House is one of the grandest aristocratic estates in Ireland. If you’re interested in history, you will love being within its elegant walls. Doubly so if you’re also drawn to modern art. The magnificent Georgian building was constructed in 1739 as the country seat for the Duke of Leinster. It’s located 12,4 miles (20 kilometers) from Dublin, in the middle of a 450-hectare country park with two golf courses. Following costly renovations in 2006, the 165 rooms and suites display a sophisticated nonchalance. The black-and-white photographs in the corridors are a nice detail. They document the illustrious history of the house, whose guests have included Queen Victoria and Grace Kelly.
