Even after a cautious opening, Bhutan—the only remaining Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas—is still one of the most mysterious countries in the world. Amanresorts was the first foreign group to be allowed to build a hotel in Bhutan. Five lodges are now part of Amankora, all in the traditional style with tamped mud walls and gently sloping roofs. Distributed over five valleys—Paro, Punakha, Gangtey, Thimphu, and Bumthang—the lodges make for a lovely tour of Bhutan. Common to them all is a spiritual atmosphere and the sublime mountain scenery enveloping them.
