An eight hour journey along a dusty road west of Cairo in the oasis of Siwa brings you to perhaps the most unusual hotel in Egypt—a location ideal for leaving the outside world behind. Built from Kershaf, a mix of salt stone, clay, and straw, the lodge blends in with its environment. The buildings (with the 40 rooms furnished in Berber style) are situated together on the salt mountain to which the lodge owes its name: Adrere Amellal means white mountain in the Berber language. Rooms are illluminated by candle light at night because there is no electricity.
