In the early 1990s Nelson Mandela withdrew to the Saxon to complete his biography “Long Walk to Freedom.” At the time, this sanctuary in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Sandhurst was still a private residence. Designer Stephen Faulk turned this rambling property into a 53-suite hotel whose warm and elegant interior creates a delightful contrast to the rigidly formal architecture of the building with its olive-green façade. Large expanses of glass offer views of the three-acre garden.
